Li-ion Batteries

August 19th, 2008

I read an interesting news story on PC Pro’s website today about a battery defect that has caused some iPod Nanos (sold between September 2005 and September 2006 in Japan) overheating and burning. Looking at the dates, this would be the original first generation Nano. Don’t worry it’s not all of them, in fact it only appears to be a small number of units that have had a problem.

It did get me thinking however, Li-ion (Lithium ion) batteries are everywhere, they’re in our phones, our laptops, our camera, mp3 players... literally everywhere. These kind of incidents are not unheard of, a couple of years ago there was a spate of laptops that went up in flames. It turned out that these cases with laptops all shared Sony batteries which were from a particular batch that were found to have a manufacturing defect. I won’t blame Sony though, as any company is capable of releasing something that has a manufacturing defect. Instead I’m more interested in Li-ion batteries from a technological point of view.

New website feature coming soon

August 17th, 2008

Ok so I know things have seemed a little quiet lately, however I decided to make a random trip back home to visit family. While I have been here I have been continuing and finishing work on a new feature for this website. This was originally meant to be in from the start, but in the end the decision was to launch without it.

As it stands, things are ready and some last minute testing is underway. All being well, check back later today to see the new addition live B)

Projiuk Outtakes

August 13th, 2008

As I'm sure many of you know, I have my own YouTube channel in which I generally post tech videos. Unfortunately in the making of the videos I often make mistakes, which never make it into the final videos. All this footage has been sitting untouched in iMovie for a while, so I decided to piece some of it together to make an outtakes video.

I had quite a bit of fun making this, and I hope you have as much fun watching it. Head on over to YouTube to see my outtakes and don't forget to check out my channel.

Enjoy B)

Ubuntu 8.04

August 11th, 2008

It’s actually been a while since I last installed a version of Linux on any computer of mine. The last time I did was Ubuntu 7, but since then I’ve bought my iMac and been enjoying OS X. I’ve been using Linux on and off since around 2002, so have been fortunate enough to see each new version of various distros change and evolve over that time.

The $900 Eee PC

August 8th, 2008

Asus have just announced a new Eee PC that will cost $900, the S101. It will have the same 1.6GHz Atom processor from Intel that the 901 and 1000 have. It will also have a 10.2 inch LED backlit screen, the 945GME chipset and a 64GB solid state drive. It’s also going to be slim, and is likely to be something akin to the Macbook Air, it was even revealed in an envelope like the Air was!

Viruses on the Mac

August 7th, 2008

I was reading Mac Format magazine the other day, and saw an article about a new Trojan Horse virus that is in the wild for the Mac platform. The way this works is by some “must download” software, such as a poker game. Once installed, the Trojan Horse embeds itself in your Mac system files and gets to work on opening back door access for an unscrupulous hacker to compromise your system.
