Tech news, reviews, comment and analysis
Well it's been and gone now, my thanks to Macworld.com for their live coverage so I could follow the announcements. Hopefully a video will be up on Apple's website so I can properly analyse.
Here's the initial results, if you don't want to read them yet then don't click to read more ![]()

Ok, lets start with the iPods
Shuffle
4 new colours released, Blue, green, red and purple - no change in capacities or price, still from £32
Classic
Interesting one here, the previous 80GB and 160GB versions have been replaced with a single model, 120GB available in silver or black for £179. Does anyone think that maybe the Classic is slowly seeing it's way to the end?
Nano
As expected the new Nano has been released, and is pretty much as was seen in the photo you can see in my rumour roundup. The iPod Nano now has an accelerometer built in, is looking really thin and comes in 9 colours: silver, black, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red and pink. Interestingly from what I can tell about the colours from the photos, they look pretty much the same kind of brightness as the 2nd generation nano, ie quite bold. Prices are £109 for the 8GB version and £149 for the 16GB version.
Touch
The Touch has been updated and now looks more like the iPhone 3G with the curved back. However, the back is not plastic as I previously thought it could be, but is stainless steel. There are now external volume controls, a built in speaker and interestingly the box it comes in appears to look like the packaging for the nano etc.
Non iPod announcements
So this is all fine and good, but is that all? Well no not really, iTunes 8 has been announced with the new Genius feature, which basically creates a playlist of tracks in your library which go together.
HDTV shows have also been announced for the iTunes store.
Finally, iPhone/iPod Touch 2.1 software has been announced and should be available from Friday. A free upgrade for iPhone users, but also for iPod Touch users who have the 2.0. I'm afraid if, like me, you still have 1.1.x on your iPod Touch then you need to pay for 2.1
Steve Jobs said that the new 2.1 fixes lots of bugs, backs up to iTunes "dramatically faster", fewer dropped calls, significantly improved battery life, fewer crashes and some new performance enhancements. This all sounds really promising, and I will be interested to see if it lives up to the claims.
Anyway that's it for the event, there was no "one more thing". I will be heading down to the Apple Store in Regent Street in the next day or so to get hands on with the new iPods, and will post back my thoughts. Also I will be posting up a video with my thoughts on YouTube as well.
