Oxford City Council to put CCTV in taxi cabs?

An interesting piece of news to emerge has been that Oxford City Council in the UK are considering plans to implement CCTV in all 600 licensed taxis in the area. The CCTV would record both video and audio, meaning that every word uttered in the taxi would be recorded.

Privacy campaigners are concerned about this being a gross invasion of privacy, however the move is an attempt by the council to ensure the safety of their licensed "cabbies" and passengers.

This is a potentially huge move, doubtless having CCTV that records just video in cabs would be welcomed. Recording the audio is unprecedented and could have a much wider impact. Oxford City Council have released a statement over the proposals.
