Why you shouldn't be disappointed with the iPhone 4S

Since the announcement of the iPhone 4S yesterday, I have seen a number of articles cropping up on the web and comments on Twitter from people who are saying that Apple should have released an iPhone 5. Also some people have expressed abject disappointment with the iPhone 4S. Here's the problem though, I simply don't understand why.

Apple have overhauled the internals, now offering an A5 processor, dual core graphics, 8 MP camera, improved battery, improved antenna and voice control. The only things the same as the iPhone 4 are the retina display and glass front / back of the phone. These updates make the iPhone 4S possibly the most powerful smartphone on the market with a competent battery to boot. Yet people are saying it's no iPhone 5. My question to these people is what exactly would constitute an iPhone 5?

...

If it's a new designed case for the phone, I really don't see how that makes any difference. A case is a case, and other than affecting the outward appearance really has little to no bearing on the phone itself. The current design is sleek, solid, well built and arguably the best looking of any smartphone on the market. In fact other than a redesigned case, I'm not exactly sure what else Apple could have done with their new iPhone?

Perhaps simply calling it the 4S is what people are complaining about, but how Apple name their products is up to Apple and really has no bearing on the competency of the device. In fact it leads me to wonder if people, including the media, have lost all perspective. Afterall this is a phone first and foremost. Apple have done a great job to update the product to make it extremely powerful. In fact I find it very hard to see what else Apple could have done. All the main boxes are checked:

  • Faster processor - check
  • More battery - check
  • Improved antenna - check
  • More graphics power - check
  • Voice control - check

Maybe it's simply the fact that people overhyped the new product before the announcement and were left disappointed that they didn't get more. The problem is I really don't see what more you could want, in fact I'm willing to bet that many who say they wanted more from the iPhone probably don't know what more they want. People expect magic from Apple, and when they perceive they haven't got that, disappointment follows.

The simple fact is that, at this point at least, there's probably little else that Apple could do. Maybe we should all take a healthy reality check and appreciate the iPhone 4S for what it really is, a beautiful looking fast performing and excellent all round smartphone.
